Eastern Rosella
New Zealand’s most brightly coloured bird.
New Zealand’s most colourful bird is the Eastern Rosella. This brightly coloured parrot was originally brought into New Zealand from Australia as a caged bird and is now common in the North Island and in some areas South. They are easy to spot by their red, blue, green and blue colours and loud chatter.
What do Eastern Rosella eat?
Although they predominantly eat seeds, which they can crack open with their strong beaks, they also eat fruit, flowers, buds and some small insects for a protein boost.
If you’d like to support the Eastern Rosella hang out some fresh fruit or fill a ground feeder with a quality bird seed. You can also help attract them with a birdbath which they will enjoy splashing about in.
