House Sparrow - Tiu

One of the most common birds in NZ, you are extremely likely to be kohabiting with some.

The little House Sparrow was introduced to New Zealand in the late 1860s to help reduce crop insect pests. But it was an ill-fated plan as it turned out that the House Sparrows’ love for seed actually made them an even greater pest than the insects. Today the House Sparrow is one of the most common birds in NZ and is seen in huge numbers across the country so you are extremely likely to be kohabiting with some.

They are clever little creatures and have learnt that living with man can be of great benefit to them. They are often seen activating electronic sensors on doors of cafes and warehouses enabling them to get in to feed on whatever they can find. They have also worked out that there is an abundance of dead insects on car radiators that are easy pickings for a quick protein-filled meal.

House Sparrows are very happy using a nesting box as long as they feel safe. The Kohab Sparrow Birdhouse has been designed specifically for this small bird. The front hole is just the right size for them, and not big enough for a predatory bird to get in and attack them or their young. Having House Sparrows living in your space is hugely rewarding as you can support them bringing new generations into the world while you get to watch them working hard to bring up their chicks.

What do House Sparrows eat?

Sparrows feed in flocks for much of the year on a variety of foods which is one of the reasons for their great success. They predominantly eat seeds and will happily visit a feeder or eat from the ground. They will also eat fruit and insects.
