If you’ve ever been pottering in the garden or out for a walk and suddenly noticed a tiny Fantail flittering around you, you’re not imagining it. Fantails really do follow people around.
It has nothing to do with superstition or omens — and everything to do with how clever and opportunistic these little birds are.
Here’s why Pīwakawaka get so close to us:
1. They get an easy snack
When you walk through the garden, you disturb tiny insects hiding in the grass, soil, or shrubs. Fantails have quickly learned that following behind humans is an easy way to grab a free meal.
Because Fantails burn through a lot of energy every day, any chance for effortless food is worth taking. They simply swoop in and help themselves to the insects you’ve stirred up.
2. They’re curious little creatures
Fantails are bold, confident birds. They investigate anything new in their territory, people, pets, boots, wheelbarrows, even lawnmowers. Their quick movements and agility mean they’re comfortable getting surprisingly close.
3. They may be checking you're not a threat
If you’re near a Fantail nest (especially in spring or early summer), you might see them watching you closely. They’re not aggressive birds, but they will try to move you along if you get too close — using alarm calls and quick, darting flights to encourage you to step back.
