Redpoll
A small Finch with a beautiful red forehead.
The Redpoll is a small Finch with dull streaks of brown colours and a pretty red tuft on its forehead. The male also has a beautiful pinkish red chest after its first few moults. It has a strong triangular beak, like others in the finch family, that it uses for breaking up hard seeds. They are mainly found in the South Island where you are likely to see them in flocks.
What does the Redpoll Eat?
Redpoll mainly eat seeds and have a love for grass seeds, but they will also eat insects to get a protein boost. They have a liking for fruit buds when in season which can be a problem in orchard areas.
Help the NZ birds you kohabit with thrive.
Here in New Zealand, we kohabit with some amazing birds, so what better way to enjoy them than by inviting them into our gardens and giving them a nutritious snack. And that’s what Kohab is all about, enjoying the creatures we kohabit our NZ gardens with while supporting them so they can thrive.
The birds you kohabit with will love:
The Kohab Open Wooden Birdhouse has been specially designed to give safe, warm shelter to a range of NZ birds that are regular visitors to your garden. The open birdhouse style replicates the birds’ natural nesting preference and will be attractive to Grey Warbler, Silvereye, Blackbirds, Song Thrush, House Sparrows and even, if you’re in luck, Tūī.
Adding a birdhouse to your garden is a great way to support and encourage your local wildlife. Not only are you providing a safe nesting box, you also get to connect more with those you kohabit your space with and have the joy of watching generation after generation of new bird life. It's a win-win.
